feel good friday: thirteen spooky things

Today is Friday the 13th, and since I love spooky things, I thought I'd share some of my findings about the myths, superstitions, and facts about this day...

  1. Fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia as well as friggatriskaidekaphobia, while triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13.
  2. Highways sometimes will skip exit 13.
  3. Hotels rarely have a room number 13.
  4. Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue.
  5. Many buildings do not have a 13th floor.
  6. Many hospitals do not have a room 13, and sometimes do not have an operating room 13.
  7. Some airline terminals do not have a gate 13.
  8. Most airplanes do not have a seat 13.
  9. Six of the Friday the 13th horror movies were released on Friday the 13th.
  10. It is believed that if a black cat crosses your path it is bad luck because the idea was that a black cat walking in your path could possibly be a witch in disguise.
  11. The number 13 has a mythical connection to death: there are 13 knots in a hangman's noose, 13 steps to the gallows, and 13 feet that the guillotine falls.
  12. The 'walking under a ladder' superstition seems to come from the christian belief in the holy trinity. When a ladder leans against a wall it forms a triangle, so walking under it would break that triangle, or trinity, which was considered blasphemous.
  13. "One hundred years ago, the British government sought to quell the longstanding superstition among seamen that setting sail on Fridays was unlucky. A special ship was commissioned and given the name "H.M.S. Friday." They laid her keel on a Friday, launched her on a Friday, selected her crew on a Friday, and hired a man named Jim Friday to be her captain. To top it off, H.M.S. Friday embarked on her maiden voyage on a Friday — and was never seen or heard from again." (

  1. love this post!!! i am down learning for the day now...does that mean I can go home?

  2. This post is both really cool and really creepy. I love that you chose to do 13 points to go along with it too.

The last sounds like an urban legend to me and I'm super skeptical of it. But, I'm skeptical of all superstitions. :p

I knew about buildings not having a 13th floor, which I always thought was strange since that would technically make the 14th floor the 13th floor in disguise!

  3. Interesting post! I didn't even really think about Friday being the 13th till the day was over!
